healthy planties

I do love plants. I have lots of them in my apartment, and want tons more in my new home (which is two weeks away!). So, good ol' Craigger did a bit of research and actually found out that some planties are WAY better than others in your home in terms of improving the quality of air and reducing allergens. Sign me up! For all you having babies (and there are alot of you), this info may also be very good to know. According to researcher Kamal Meattle, based on years of NASA studies, other scientific research, and 15 years of his own testing, he found that arranging these three basic green plants within your home results in significantly cleaner air. We can make these look pretty in our homes, no?

The Best Bedroom Plant: Mother-in-Law's Tongue is apparently an "evening oxygen factory". It's recommended to be 6-8 waist-high plants per person.
The Money Plant helps to remove formaldehyde and other volatile organic chemicals from the air
Healthiest Living Room Plant: The Areca Palm is also apparently a daytime oxygen factory, recommended to have 4 shoulder height plants per person
Other options: the purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa), English ivy (Hedera Helix), variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa), Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) and the Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida). Apparently, of 28 plants tested, these five were effective at reducing levels of a number of common household VOCs, including benzene, toluene, octane, alpha-pinene and TCE. {work funded by the University of Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Stations, was published in the August 2009 issue of HortScience.}
